Stitched Histories of Pocahontas

The Eddie Mae Herron Center Quilting Group of Pocahontas, Arkansas, carries forward a tradition of quilting rooted in community, storytelling, and intergenerational connection. Working within one of Arkansas’s most important African American heritage sites, the quilters preserve both craft knowledge and the stories that have sustained generations of families in Randolph County.

For decades, quilting has been an essential part of life at the Eddie Mae Herron Center, where community members have gathered to stitch, share memories, and pass knowledge from one generation to the next. Today, the group continues that legacy, demonstrating how quilting serves not only as an art form, but as an act of preservation, care, and cultural resilience.

Housed in the historic former St. Mary’s AME Church and Pocahontas Colored School, the Eddie Mae Herron Center remains a place where African American history is actively lived and shared. Through quilting, the group honors the creativity, resourcefulness, and collective spirit that have long defined Black communities throughout Arkansas.
