Community Square Dance with Pete Howard Band / Willi Carlisle Calling

Pete Howard’s string band plays. Willi Carlisle calls. The floor fills up. No experience required, just bring your feet.
The Ozark Highballers string band

The Arkansas square dance tradition runs on three things: a tight string band, a generous caller, and a willing floor. The festival provides all three.

Pete Howard leads the band, drawing on the old‑time fiddle and dance tradition of the Ozarks to provide the reels, rags, and breakdowns that have powered community square dances across the state for generations. Willi Carlisle calls, walking participants through the steps with the warmth, humor, and generosity that have made him one of Arkansas’s most beloved folk musicians.

If you have never square danced, this is the easiest possible introduction. If you have, you already know.
