Pocahontas Hog Butchering Demonstration
Community, Craft, and Shared History in Pocahontas
The annual Pocahontas Hog Butchering Demonstration at the Eddie Mae Herron Center — a historic space that served as a church, community center, and school, now restored as a community center featuring traditional craft and a local African American history museum. The day included guessing the hog's weight, scalding and butchering, gospel songs and stories, an auction for the hog cuts, and a communal potluck dinner — bringing together Black and white communities in Pocahontas.
